Java AnyType variables?

my teacher gave us methods that have AnyType variables as parameters, but when I try to call them using an int, I get a compiler error? So what is an AnyType variable? How can I use ints with a method that takes takes AnyType? I am so confused and he made it seem like it was self explanatory...
