Is the OTR trucking job market affected by gas prices?

I am thinking of getting into a career in OTR trucking. I have tried the college thing and really cant find something I truly would enjoy doing. Everyone is saying that the job market in trucking is bad due to the high gas prices and food prices. I am thinking that there is always a need for food and product and we need people to deliver this stuff regardless. Any real OTR truckers that can let me know. Also can you let me know some of the things you enjoy and dislike about the trucking industry? thanks.
