How do I know if the Automatic 4WD for my 2005 Ford Escape works?

I've driven in blizzards and almost slipped off the road, but did not feel as though the AWD kicked on. The system light shows the 4WD when I start the car, but I have never seen it come on with about 40,000 miles on the car.
